THIS WEEK IN HORIZON (March 16 - 20, 2015)
Kevin C. Garinger – Director of Education

I want to begin this week by thanking each of you in Horizon School Division. At our collaborative learning day, we were given some hard news that came out of our literacy assessments. What I noticed about the sharing of our literacy data is that there has been no blaming…no excuses. There is simply a resolve to address our results and an appreciation that, in knowing our results, we are better able to respond proactively and in new and different ways in support of our students. It is the way we respond to difficult news that sets us apart and makes the ultimate difference moving forward. The assessments each of our teachers performed didn’t create the circumstances…they created the awareness that things need to change. Over the years, we have been good teachers doing good work but somehow that good work has resulted in the deficit we saw in our data. This deficit didn’t happen this year or even over the last few years. It is not the result of a group of weak teachers doing poor work, or even a weak group of students or a full moon. It is a systemic matter that has been brought to light by the work of each of us and because of the work of each of us, our students will improve.
